This is because while the graphics do link to the books and films, they don’t ram the storylines in your face, and so you can make the story about whatever you want. We hope this was an intentional decision by Tom Horn to do this, but either way it works out well.

With that said, if you are a casino fanatic and are looking for a cinematic experience to help recreate the feeling of spending an afternoon in one of the many free online casinos out there these days, keep reading the below article for a run-down of some of the best casino movies available on Netflix.

Casino (1995)

To start the list of epic casino movies off, you can’t get much better than Scorsese’s 1995 masterpiece Casino. With a star-studded cast including Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone, and Joe Pesci, Casino is one of the most finely crafted and most popular casino movies of all time. In fact, few movies have done as much to define the sub-genre.

The story follows Ace Rothstein and Nicky Santoro as they make the shift from being high-ranking members of the mafia to casino managers—which goes about as well as you could imagine! Everything seems to be going relatively well until Rothstein falls in love with the gorgeous hustler, Ginger. With all this going on in the background, Santoro gradually slips into a pattern of violent behavior and heavy reliance on drugs. From there, the plot takes a turn for the worst. And without wanting to spoil anything, the climax is epic! This is definitely one not to be missed!

Casino Royale (2006)

Casino Royale 2021

Although the casino setting and gambling feature heavily throughout the ‘James Bond’ franchise, it is Casino Royale where it takes center stage. And this is equally true of the original 1960s version of the movie as it is of the 2006 remake and refresh.

In the 2006 remake, Daniel Craig takes center stage as the eponymous James Bond, who we follow on a series of dangerous assignments that take us through various scenarios culminating in a high-stakes casino game. In this scene, his mission is simple; win the game, catch the villain, and save the world. While we don’t want to spoil the ending for you, needless to say, the climax is as you would expect and a very Bond-worthy introduction to the series for Daniel Craig!

The Gambler (2014)

Released in 2014 to a somewhat muted critical reception, The Gambler has nevertheless gone on to establish itself as a fan favorite and has more than earned its place in the hallowed halls of classic gambling movies.

Starring Mark Wahlberg delivering a high amplitude performance as Jim Bennett—a literature professor turned gambling enthusiasts—this film charts the rise and fall of a skilled but flawed poker player. Such is Bennet’s enthusiasm for the poker table that he eventually runs out of the necessary funds to fuel his games, which lands him in trouble with some local loan sharks. For Bennett, however, the very skills that got him into this mess will be the same ones that get him out of it.

Molly’s Game (2017)

Casino Royale Trailer 2021

Although one of the newer films on the list, it does not mean it is any less iconic! The 2017 film Molly’s Game tells the true story of Molly Bloom—played by the fantastic Jessica Chastain. Bloom, a former Olympic skier, turns to the world of high-stakes poker as a somewhat unusual post-Olympics career. Unfortunately for Molly, this brings a level of wealth and status that quickly turns her into an FBI target.

From here, things get ramped up a notch, and Aaron Sorkin does an excellent job of creating an engaging film that plunges you into the fascinating world of high stakes gamblers. But with the odds increasingly stacked against her, she quickly begins to run out of (legal) options. Helped by Idris Elba’s excellent performance, Molly’s Game is definitely one of the more memorable and better-crafted gambling movies to come out in the last few years.
